Continuous deployment automation platform provider Octopus Deploy announced today that it is acquiring Codefresh, which produces a modern CI/CD platform with GitOps and is a maintainer of the Argo open-source delivery project. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The acquisition in part is to strengthen Octopus’ support for Kubernetes, according to the company’s announcement.

“Octopus is thrilled to welcome Codefresh into the team,” said Paul Stovell, founder and CEO of Octopus Deploy, said in a statement. “We’re adding Codefresh’s considerable technology to empower software teams to deploy freely. It represents a big investment in open source and the Argo project that Codefresh maintains and scales with its enterprise offering.”

The integration of Codefresh into the Octopus platform will provide what the company called in its announcement “unparalleled benefits for software teams, including advanced CD, deployment automation, release orchestration, environment progression, observability and enterprise compliance across all workloads.”

According to Octopus Deploy, the acquisition will make the company platform and technology the most comprehensive CD solution at scale, bringing CD, CI and GitOps into a unified software delivery pipeline platform.

“We are eager to bring the power of Codefresh’s Continuous Integration and cloud-native GitOps – based on Argo – to Octopus Deploy,” said Raziel Tabib, founder and CEO of

Codefresh, in the statement. “With Codefresh and Octopus, we will elevate the capabilities available to software teams and drive innovation in Continuous Delivery.”

Dan Garfield, co-founder and chief open source officer at Codefresh, said in a statement: “We’re thrilled to find a home in Octopus, where they believe in the community we’ve helped build around Argo and GitOps. We’re going to be able to invest even more in open source and continue to grow Argo and other open-source initiatives with our community partners.”

With the recent closure of Weaveworks, which defined GitOps and created Flux CD, that project and Argo CD remain the two leading open-source efforts for CD, Kubernetes and GitOps, where they are incubating at the Cloud Native Computing Foundation.

Codefresh is hoping to make it easier for development teams to manage applications throughout the software development life cycle with its latest update.

It is introducing a new environments dashboard to pull in information about GitOps and Argo CD projects. Codefresh defines an environment as a cluster of applications, namespaces in a single cluster, or namespaces in different clusters.

During a webinar demoing the new feature today, Kostis Kapelonis, senior developer advocate at Codefresh, explained that some of the negatives of using Argo CD alone are that it doesn’t have a concept of environments and doesn’t have context of applications, such as the fact that applications may be a part of a larger product.

This new dashboard provides a single-screen experience that shows environments from left to right, from development to testing to production. It offers developers the ability to define what applications a product contains and to assign products to an environment.

Codefresh explained that having a single-screen environment means that developers won’t have to switch between multiple windows for the terminal, GitHub, and an IDE when managing environments or pushing applications to production.

According to Kapelonis, the new environment manager also helps project managers better understand which features are in which environments.

And in addition to providing a high level view of deployments, developers can also drill down deeper into specific applications with a timeline view that shows how applications have advanced through different environments, Kapelonis explained.

“As businesses and DevOps teams grow, Argo CD instances split, and microservices multiply, managing the lifecycle of each application across environments becomes complex and arduous,” said Dan Garfield, co-founder and chief open-source officer at Codefresh. “The new Codefresh capabilities instill clarity and GitOps governance across hundreds of applications deploying to thousands of locations – with a unified, intuitive single-screen experience.”

Codefresh is hoping to solve some of the limitations of GitOps with its new GitOps 2.0 initiative. As part of the initiative, Codefresh will be providing several tools intended to improve the experience and speed of CI/CD.

GitOps is a software deployment model for cloud-native applications that has issues currently needing to be addressed, such as dealing with multiple environments, secrets, and observability. The goal of GitOps 2.0 is to “provide patterns and standards that improve software delivery and reliability.”

Codefresh will work with the community to define those patterns and standardize approaches to delivering software.

The company will offer tooling that provides a detailed view of everything released to a release, control over rollback, and larger aggregate views that make it easy to tell what’s going on across all applications. According to Codefresh, that visibility and control gives teams more confidence in release processes, leading to faster, more reliable deployments.

“The adoption of GitOps 2.0 isn’t an all or nothing endeavor. With this release we’re providing onramps for teams to adopt these practices as quickly as their org allows, and ultimately to support the ideal workflows,” said Dan Garfield, chief technology evangelist at Codefresh.

Codefresh, providers of a Kubernetes-native automated continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) solution, released a new user interface and upgraded capabilities that can speed code changes.

The new Projects section groups pipelines, secrets, and permissions into a single hub. In addition, the new Pipeline Creation Wizard handles webhook creation, and provides quick-start templates for Go, Java, Node.js, Python, Ruby on Rails, Scala and more.

“The expectation to bring more code to production, faster, has never been higher. At the same time, it’s never been easier for developers to let CI/CD tools do the heavy lifting,” said Dan Garfield, Codefresh’s chief technology evangelist.

SAFECode gets several new members
Accenture, Splunk and United Technologies joined Software Assurance Forum for Excellence in Code (SAFECode) as new associate members, and Veracode rejoined.

SAFECode is a non-profit, global industry forum in which experts exchange ideas on promoting scalable and effective software security programs. Non-members can get free access to training videos and publications.

“The addition of these companies as SAFECode members is significant because they bring a deep expertise in secure software development and a broad industry perspective,” said Steve Lipner, the executive director of SAFECode.

CloudBees joins Automotive Grade Linux
CloudBees, provider of continuous pipelines, has joined the non-profit Automotive Grade Linux (AGL) to further the cross-industry effort to expedite software development for car makers.

“For car technology organizations, getting new software off the assembly line and onto the road faster matters, but a more rapid innovation cycle is not possible with lengthy builds and testing cycles,” said Anders Wallgren, vice president of technology strategy, CloudBees. “CloudBees is an engine to help these development and engineering teams create safer car technology, faster, by accelerating builds and optimizing tests, thus creating more time to iterate and experiment.”

The non-profit provides an open platform in which over 130 members can reuse and share open source code for automotive software. This reduces the development times and costs.

Talend announces advancements to Data Fabric
Talend, which specializes in cloud data integration and data integrity, announced support for OpenAPI specification (OAS) version 3.0 in its release of Talend Data Fabric this spring.

“Given the growth of APIs driven by microservices and digital initiatives, support for an environment that increases DevOps teams’ productivity while enabling collaboration with less technical API stakeholders becomes critically important,” said Jerome Louvel, vice president of product management at Talend.

The advancements provide full API development lifecycle support for building and maintaining APIs in an integrated environment.

The highlights for OAS 3.0 include data type composition and polymorphism, documentation of new security schemes, reusable API components as well as additional features and cloud enhancements listed in this company post.

For many developers, November is the time of the year where they look to sharpen their skills and dedicate more of their time to outside projects. Much like the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) initiative where writers commit to writing 50,000 words in the month of November, developers commit to writing code. A few years ago an initiative called Progvember was launched to encourage developers to create a computer program within the 30 days. Progvember seems to have died out, but in its place rose Codevember, a November challenge to get developers to code everyday.

This year, Codefresh wants to get in on the phone with a month-long do-it-from-home DevOps hackathon: Fixvember. Fixvember aims to encourage developers to contribute to open-source projects and improve their DevOps skills by focusing on building automation, adding better testing and fixing bugs.

“DevOps has gone mainstream. DevOps engineers are now one of the highest paid types of engineers. By highlighting DevOps and its importance in the engineering process, we hope to expose more engineers to these ideas and best practices. DevOps engineers can bring their expertise to open source projects and collaborate with engineers at varying skill levels,” said Dan Garfield, chief technology evangelist for Codefresh.

According to Garfield, the company decided to launch Fixvember after last year’s Hacktoberfest. “We thought about all these new features people added that probably didn’t come with tests. So it started as a joke that November is when you ‘fix’ all the stuff you got in October,” he said.

‘The goal of Fixvember is to get people thinking about how they use DevOps best practices in all their repos. Unit tests, integration tests, security scanning, performance testing, fuzz testing, etc, etc,” the company wrote in a blog post announcing the event.

As part of Fixvember, Codefresh will be providing free accounts with 120 builds per month, a private Docker registry, a private Helm repository, unlimited users and unlimited repos.

“Anything you add to improve DevOps will continue to pay off with more reliable and easy to use processes. For many engineers this will be the first time they get a pipeline setup and they can add to it as time goes on,” said Garfield.
